Library Reorganization
The library is in the process of reorganizing it's collection and looking to patrons for suggestions for the improvement of library materials and services.
As the staff at Chico Public Library continue to look for ways to better serve its patrons, we are looking at the organization and contents of our collection. In past months we have begun by reorganizing our Adult Non-Fiction and Biography section, which is located in the back room. We are also in the process of weeding out unused or outdated titles. As we go along, we plan to move our Non-fiction video/DVD collection to a more prominent location within the library. The staff has also taken a look at our unused reference section previously located in our patron computer section and has weeded out a large portion of the outdated materials. The remaining reference collection has been moved to the back room along with the Adult Non-Fiction and Biography collection.
The section previously used for reference has undergone dramatic changes as staff and board members have taken out old shelving and replaced it with more attractive shelves. This section now holds our Audio Collection in a more accessible and attractive location. Our current Audio collection consists of Adult Non-Fiction and Juvenile titles on CD and Tape, as well as Music CD's. We are looking to expand this collection and welcome patron input on what they would like to see included in our materials.
More shelving changes are planned in the coming weeks, which will enable us to better organize our Large Print collection and make room for the expansion of our Hispanic collection in a more prominent location. We have looked at our current Large Print and Hispanic selections and have made changes to the types of titles we will be purchasing in the future. Staff is looking to patrons for suggestions on titles and materials they would like to see included in these areas.
In looking to our young patrons, the library has purchased kid friendly furniture such as bean bags and floor rockers. These have been placed in the children's section in place of the old table and chairs which took up most of the room in that area. Children coming in to the library seem to enjoy the change with the ability to sit in comfort to read a book or two while Mom or Dad look for books of their own or conduct business on library computers. Staff is looking to more changes in the young reader and juvenile sections in the future.
While there are many changes coming to our library in order to meet the ever changing needs of our patrons, staff at Chico Public Library are dedicated not only to the improvement of our services, but to providing these services with the same friendly and helpful atmosphere our patrons have come to depend on. Once again, patron input is always valued in any area in order to better serve our community.
